TO-DO LIST, BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS

Travel Plans

If you are located someplace other than the Tokyo area:

You will need to make travel arrangements from wherever you are. It is highly recommended that you start this planning as soon as possible. See more information on making travel plans on the Travel Details page .

NOTE for Participants or Staff who stay on site beyond 1 July 2018:

If you have to stay at Tama Recreation Area beyond 1 July, Scouts and staff will be moved to the Tama Lodge for a maximum of 1 night. Please make sure to bring extra cash to pay for food and extra items if they plan to eat at the lodge or purchase items from the Gift Store.

Once you arrive at the Airport:

As long as we have your flight information well in advance, we will have someone meet you at the airport, just outside of baggage claim (Domestic Side) or immigration on the international side. Make sure you are traveling in some BSA affiliated Class 'A' or Class 'B' uniform so you can be easily recognized.

Travel Visa May be required

But just as important as finding a flight, you may also need to get a Travel Visa just to visit Japan. Several countries have an agreement with Japan and can stay for short-term (15 to 90 days) without a Visa. Some require a Visa before you travel.

Please check our Travel Visa Page for more information on your country of nationality.

NYLT Course Site Information

For information about the course location, please see our Tama Hills Recreation Area Page, to get an idea what living conditions might be like here. To include the average weather conditions, pictures and a map of the area. There are also driving directions for those of you who will be driving to the camp.

What to Pack, and What NOT to pack

To plan your pack, visit our Packing List page to plan what you need to pack, along with what you do not need, or are prohibited to bring to camp.

Most importantly, remember this is a 6-day camp. There are showers available, and the water is hot, but there is not a laundry service available.

Participants will be carrying all personal equipment from the registration area to the campsites.  There will also be an overnight camp requiring a short hike.  Participants must not use suitcases, footlockers or trunks.  Large duffels or backpacks are best.  A backpack and appropriate personal gear are required for the overnighter (one night).  Personal gear not required for the overnighter will be stored.

Uniforms

For information on Uniforms, please see our Uniforms Page

NYLT is a national training program delivered at the council level.  In line with other Council, Region and National events, Staff and participants alike are expected to wear a complete official Boy Scout, or Venturing uniform. See Uniforms Page.

NYLT also requires an activity uniform and other equipment described in the Packing List Page.

Once you register for NYLT as a Participant, or Staff Member, Youth or Adult, you can receive a 20% Discount at the Scout Store for any uniform item. See uniforms page for Discount form and pricelist.
